Many people are not happy or contented with themselves. They feel ugly on the inside. Even people who appear to be successful in life can still feel ugly on the inside.
The ugliness could be fear, loneliness, addictions, anger, lust, stress and a number of afflictions of the heart. Ugliness of the heart steals a persons enjoyment of life. I am convinced that life is meant to be enjoyed. God wants you to be fulfilled in life.
In the great movie 'Shrek' we are introduced to two characters who struggle with ugliness. Shrek is an ugly green ogre who lives in a swamp all by himself. He is cynical about life and people. Is ugliness causes others to reject him. He wants friends but he keeps pushing them away. Even the talking donkey struggles to make friends with Shrek.
The second character struggling with ugliness is Princess Fiona. Princess Fiona is a beautiful by day but ugly at night. Her ugliness is not obvious to others but it is obvious to her.
Some people are like Shrek. Prickly people whose inner ugliness is obvious to all. Some people are like Princess Fiona. They keep a 'mask' on to look beautiful but when they are on their own they do not like what they see about themselves.
So how do you break the ugliness cycle? Good question.
I have fives steps to help break the ugliness cycle.
1. Get Your Eyes Off Yourself
While Shrek was consumed with himself he remained discontented and cynical. But once he started on his quest to rescue Princess Fiona things started to change for him.
There is a law of nature. This is the law "If you want something in your own life, then give it away."
When you help others you actually help yourself.
2. Let go of the past.
Holding on to the past only ruins the present. Bad things happen to us that we perhaps have no control over. We ourselves can disappoint.
But replaying events in our minds over and over again only serves to create stress and depression.
You cannot change the past so you have to let it go. You have to forgive and move on.
The Bible speaks of a man who behaved like a religious fanatic. His name was Saul. He persecuted Christians. He even had some innocent people put to death. But Saul, himself became a Christian. Imagine having to live with himself after what he had done to others.
But Saul found strength in God. Eventually Saul wrote in a wonderful letter "But one thing I do, forgetting what is behind...."
You have to let go of the past.
3. Be Contented With Yourself
Everyone is different. Some people are tall and other short. Some are academic and others creative. Some are extroverts and others introverts. Some have large ears, others small ears.
Every person is unique. Every person has the imprint of God upon them. It is our individual uniqueness that makes each of us very significant. Therefore, stop trying to be someone you are not. You are incredibly special already. The world needs you to be you!
Princess Fiona finally accepted herself at the end of the movie, marrying Shrek. Be contented with yourself. Then others will accept you too.
4. Don't Judge Others
Ugly people always criticise others. This behaviour reflects their own inner ugliness. Stop judging others then others won't judge you.
5. You Must Be Born Again
This is the key step that ties everything else together.
Have you ever said to yourself "I wish I could start all over again?"
A man by the name of Nicodemus wanted to start all over again. He came to visit Jesus at night so that no one would see him talking to Jesus.
Nick was outwardly successful. But he was like Princess Fiona…he looked good to everyone but inside he was ugly.
So Nicodemus came to Jesus looking for some answers.
Jesus said "Nick, you can start all over again. In fact you must start all over again. You must be 'Born Again."
That was great news but Nick was confused. "What do I have to be born like a baby?"
Jesus said "no, but just as you have been born naturally so you can have new life in your spirit."
Then Jesus came out with the most well known statement in the New Testament:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
If you want to have change in your life then it starts on the inside and it comes by making your relationship with God right.
When you are right with God, Jesus puts his life in your heart and you have the power to change.
I believe we can get rid of the ugliness inside....but we need that divine help. We need Jesus.
Do you want to break the ugliness cycle? Then start with asking Jesus Christ into your life today.
