Author Topic: Backing up KAP  (Read 2550 times)

I have a task set in KAP to back itself up to an external HDD daily at 20:00. I trust KAP implicitly so never thought to check that it had done its job however this weekend I just happened to compare the current KAP directory with the backup and discovered that KAP has never backed itself up since the first time I manually copied everything over to the backup folder last August.

Ian, can you give me some tips on how to achieve this please, or is the problem that it cannot back itself up while the program is open?

Hi Alessia

I backup Kirby Alarm (and other files)? all the time.
The fact the files are open does not seem to make any difference.

Are your sure your backup parameters are correct?
ie are you backing up the correct folder?

I have attached some screen dumps of my settings.
(I am using windows xp so the "program files" is easy to find. In Vista a separate programs folder is creating for each user so it can be a bit tricky unless you have installed Kirby Alarm to say c:Kirby Alarm Pro)

The first two screen dumps show my settings.
The third screen dump just proves the backup folder is up to date.

Thanks for your lightning fast reply Ian. From what you have told and shown me, I would say I have it setup exactly as it should be, unless I'm missing something?

Notice the last backups showing are on 30/01/2009 and 31/01/2009 and I did both of those manually. The laptop is left on all day long and most of the night so the last backup should have been yesterday's date 01/02/2009.

Hi Alessia

Can you please post a screen dump of the source folder as well please
(ie c:kirby alarm pro)

(I would just like to confirm the file dates in that folder are current)

Ian

PS. I am off to bed now, so will not be able to get back to until tomorrow.

Hi Alessia

Sorry for the delay in gettign back to you.

I just had another look at the screen dumps you sent.

Below is a screen shot of your previous post.
Notice how the date/time stamp on ALARMLOG.tps, ALARMS.tps etc is the 31/1/2009?

It appears as though the files are in fact being backed up.

DOH!!

Sorry about that Alessia. I should have noticed that!

I think the quickest and easiest solution would be for me to remotely connect to your computer so I can see (and hopefully fix the problem)

I have been successfully working with a new software called TeamViewer that allows me to connect to the desktop of anyone on the Internet within a few seconds.
It also works the other way round so I can present the things on my computer screen to someone else.

It's really a cool thing and might also be valuable for you. It is free for personal use and very secure.
Check out http://www.teamviewer.com and click on the green "download now" button.

Once installed we can then arrange a convenient time to connect.

Kind regards
Ian

Just a quick update on what happened in case others may read this thread ...

There was actually no problem with the backup process in Kirby Alarm.

When Kirby Alarm does the backup it maintains the directory structure on the destination folder.

For example, the source folder was "c:kirby alarm pro"
The destination folder was "k:ackups"

When kirby alarm does the backup to K drive the directory structure would be "k:ackupsckirby alarm pro"

Alessia was looking at a manual backup she had done (in her case the manual backup was to "k:ackupskirby alarm pro"
(Notice the missing "c")

When we had a look at "k:ackupsckirby alarm pro" on the computer the correct daily backup automatically done by kirby alarm was there ok.

There was actually never a problem, but it took me a while to notice it! Smiley

I would just like to add my sincerest thanks to Ian for his intervention. It took almost an hour to discover where the problem was because we were both looking at K:/Backups/Kirby Alarm Pro. Ian provided customer service way beyond that supplied by most software authors. When you consider how much Kirby Alarm costs it doesn't take a rocket sciientist to figure out that with this kind of customer service it's worth every penny and then some!!!
