Been using Kirby Alarm for many years. Been using Kirby Alarm Pro v4.42 since 23-Nov-2007. Since I upgraded and purchased the pro version, I occasionally get this message after rebooting (I have Kirby Alarm starting automatically on reboot).

----
File Access Error.
File KAREGIST could not be opened. Error: File Not Found(2). Press OK to end this application.
----
(see attached screen shot)

When I click "OK", the program just ends. So it never actually starts up. This has happened a few times now since I upgraded. Eventually, Kirby Alarm would start, though I don't know exactly what happened to make it finally go. I think I just rebooted a few times. I have no idea what this is. The name KAREGIST is not familiar to me, I don't know what it is. A complete search of my C drive for that name shows nothing.

I do have a few custom variables defined that get there contents from a file. So I suspect it might have to do with this, but that's about as far as I've gotten. Right now, I can't get Kirby Alarm to start.

Hi Scott

KAREGIST.TPS should exist in the kirby alarm pro folder.
(in fact all of the files that kirby alarm uses are located in the kirby alarm pro folder)

I think the best thing to do will be to uninstall and reinstall kirby alarm pro.

(1) Exit kirby alarm by right clicking on the tray icon and selecting exit
(2) Make a copy of the existing kirby alarm pro folder (this is so we can recover your current alarms etc)
(3) Uninstall kirby alarm
(4) Use windows explorer to delete the kirby alarm pro folder
(5) Download and reinstall kirby alarm (I will send you a new rego code in a separate email)

Does kirby alarm pro start ok?
If so, reboot your computer and see if the error comes up anymore.

If all is ok then you can copy your old alarms etc from the backup folder by copying alarms.tps
(you will need to exit KA before doing the copy otherwise windows will complain the file is in use)

Hope this helps

Thanks Ian. I did all that and things seem fine now. My last reboot (with my own alarms file back in there) went just fine.

For what it's worth, before I got your reply, I had gotten Kirby Alarm Pro to start by just double clicking the icon on my desktop. So it would seem that the KARegist.TPS file had perhaps disappeared and then reappeared, which of course would be quite strange. I do have a batch file that runs (via Kirby schedule) that clears out files in my temp folder, so I double checked that to make sure it's not deleting other files, and it's not.

In any case, I've got over 40 events scheduled, and it looks okay for now. I'll of course keep an eye on it.

One suggestion though. When I first started seeing the error, I did not know that it was even Kirby Alarm with the problem. I've got a number of programs that start upon reboot, and the error message dialog box doesn't mention Kirby Alarm anywhere. I think I finally figured it out when I saw the KA icon in my taskbar (because the error window was still open), and I realized that KA was not running. Perhaps you can add the KA name to the title bar of any error message dialog box.

Thanks again.

Hi Scott
Glad to hear everything is ok.

I take your point about the error message and will see what can be done.

Ian, I recently started having the same file access problem with version 4.44. Following the instructions you gave above, I have reinstalled this same version again. It seems to be working fine now.

As a clue on why this fails at boot time: After the file access failure, I was able to go to the program itself and start it. This worked every time I tried it. So it seems that something is happening at boot time causes KA to not find the KAREGIST.TPS file. Like Scott, I have several programs that start at boot. Perhaps there's some sort of timing interference. I'm aware of other programs that allow the user to set a delay time during their boot, to get around this sort of thing. Perhaps KA boot could be delayed say 20 seconds while other programs settle down.

Also it's peculiar that the 'file not found' is always KAREGIST.TPS and none of the other KA files. Something odd in KA itself, or perhaps connected other programs as above?

But I need a new registration number, please.

Thanks.

Hi Charlie, Thanks for extra info!

In case you are not aware of this, if you backup and restore the entire kirby alarm pro folder (including karegist.tps) there is no need to enter a new rego code.
However if you still need a new rego code can you please end me a quick email so I can look up your details.
My email address is ian@kirbyfooty.com
