Consider adding an "Action" named "Open webpage".

Allow the "Address" for the webpage a limit of 1000 characters.

Allow the user to choose browser.

I currently do this using "Run Program", and put the address in the "Command Line" field. However, most of my addresses are very long and I have to use a service like TinyURL to get the address to a size that will work. This adds an extra step to the process and this Kirby Pro user would be very appreciative of this new feature. I would be willing to buy several new Pro licenses in return for this.

Thank you for considering this Ian.

Hi Rodger

Thanks for the suggestion.

Kirby Alarm Pro already has the feature you have asked for (if not exactly what you want please let me know and I will happy to make the change)

If you use the "Open File" action option and enter the web site address in the file and command line variables (That will give you 508 characters in total), then kirby alarm will open the web site using your default browser.

The "open file" can be used to open any file providing the windows association has been set up. eg to open  a word document, just enter the document name (no need to enter the path to msword, just the document name). The same principle applies for xls spreadsheets, pdf documents etc etc.

Here is a screen shot showing the settings for KA to open a web page

Ian,

Thanks for the quick response.

I've tried splitting the address and putting half in each field, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I assume from your description that this is what you feel should work. When I do this and test the alarm, the result is as if the contents of the Command Line variable is ignored.

I will also mention that trying to find the middle of a URL that's hundreds of characters long is tedious. I have to paste it into a text editor, guess where the middle is and then piece it into the fields. This isn't much fun. Following is the 386 character URL I'm trying to use. I am using Vista in case that should be an issue, which hasn't been so far.

Yikes. I see what you mean.

No problem. I will change the program to accept a longer string.

Have a great Christmas.

Hi Rodger,
I have made the change you suggested regarding a longer web site address.

You can upgrade download and install a beta version from http://www.kirbyfooty.com/kirbyalarmprosetup_v4.43.exe

It's pretty straight forward.  You won't lose any alarms or anything
Just a couple of things to watch out for..

(1) Exit Kirby Alarm (right click on the tray icon and select exit)
(2) Install the new version into the SAME folder as the original
(3) Do NOT to select to create short cuts in the start menu (they are already there)

Please note this version is still under development and has not been officially released. I still have quite a few other changes I would like to make. I am using it everyday and have no problems with it. When the 'official' version of v4.43 is released you will need to download and install it again.

The changes made so far in this version are..
  • New option in preferences to set hot keys that will make Kirby Alarm even easier to use. Create alarms, to do items, contacts, display calendar, quickly and easily by pressing a key combination (eg Ctrl Alt A) that you assign to various tasks.
  • New option in contacts screen to copy the name and address to the clipboard.
  • New option in preferences to set "stay on top" behavior of pop up notes.
  • New option in the Pop Up Note tab in the preferences screen on where to set the focus.
  • Fix bug. Displaying warning message about posting an alarm using an advanced option even though the user has registered the pro version.
  • New option in ToDo list to attach a document (or web address, file, etc) that relates to the item to be done.
  • New button on To Do List browse to open the related file.
  • Fix bug in creating snoozed item. It was not copying all of the fields (eg skip missed alarm)
  • New option in FTP action on what to do with the source file.
  • This means you will have the following options after the transfer..
      - to Do nothing
      - or Delete the source file
      - or Append YYMMDDhhmm to the file extension of the source file
      - or Append a user defined string (eg DONE) to the file extension of the source file
      - or Move the source file to another folder.
  • New action to open a web page. This could have been done previously using the "Open File" action, but it was not very obvious, and it oly allowed url's of 255  characters. This new option allows url's to be up to 1000 characters long!
  • New spell checker function (requires Microsoft Word). Just press F7 to spell check the current textbox.
  • Fix bug when copying an alarm. It was sometimes showing the simple screen, when it should be showing the advanced screen depending upon the alarm action.

Now, how many copies of Kirby Alarm Pro will you be requiring? <grin>

Any problems please do not hesitate to contact me.

I will be only too willing to help anyway I can.

Kind regards
Ian
